Dye with Alder Cone
Hello
While spring is showing signs everywhere, I would like to come back on a winter dye. Alder trees are growing quite well on the island. They produce these beautiful cone and keep them all winter long. Eventually they will detached from the tree with the help of the wind.
If you find an alder tree cut down have a look at the bright intense orange colour of the wood.
When I harvest the cone during a rainy day, drops of orange sap will pour over my hands.
This is the same orange colour I obtain when I extract the dye from the cones. However, the colour on the cotton rope is more of a golden yellow.
And modified with iron soup it turn in a very dark shade of grey.
